Want List Review by James Harrington

PRICE Preludes for Piano. In the Land O’ Cotton Suite. Joy in June. Child Asleep. Arkansas Jitter. Piano Sonata in e Walwyn KADORO KLASSICS 13285 77062 (59:14)

There is not a piece on Karen Walwyn’s Florence Price program that I haven’t enjoyed multiple times. Walwyn is an inspiration. Whether pieces influenced by Gershwin and jazz, or those inspired by spirituals, her playing captures the essence of Price’s inventive writing with personality, sensitivity, and flair. There are many rhythmic and harmonic strengths here, not the least, those musical patterns which we may anticipate, but Price varies surprisingly. It is no surprise that, because of releases like this, we are experiencing a discovery at the highest levels of music composed and arranged by Price. This recording has excellent piano sound and an informative booklet, including insights by the pianist herself. James Harrington
